The Only Piercing Aftercare Guide You Need (Backed by Industry Standards)
Share
Getting a new piercing is the easy part, healing it properly is where everything counts.
Every week, I see clients struggling with irritation, swelling, or delayed healing… and most of the time, it comes down to misinformation or inconsistent aftercare.
This guide is designed to give you clear, professional, and up-to-date advice based on current industry standards, including guidance from the Australian Safe Piercing Association.
🧼 The Golden Rule: Keep It Clean & Leave It Alone
Healing a piercing isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing the right things consistently.
Your aftercare should be simple:
- Clean twice daily with sterile saline (NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Sterile Saline Wound Wash)
- Avoid touching or rotating the jewellery
- Keep pressure and friction to a minimum
Over cleaning, twisting, or using harsh products will slow healing, not speed it up.
💧 What To Use (And What To Avoid)
Use:
- Sterile saline solution (like NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Sterile Saline Wound Wash)
- Clean hands before and after cleaning!
Avoid:
- Alcohol, peroxide, or antiseptics
- Tea tree oil
- Homemade salt solutions (these are often too strong or contaminated)
Your body heals best when it isn’t being constantly disrupted.
🌊 Things That Can Delay Healing
Especially here in Gippsland, your environment plays a bigger role than most people realise.
Be mindful of:
- Swimming (oceans, lakes, pools, spas)
- Sweat and heat
- Sunscreen and skincare products near the piercing
- Sleeping on the piercing
- Tight clothing or friction (especially navels & cartilage)
Healing isn’t just about cleaning, it’s about everything your piercing is exposed to daily.
⏱️ Healing Takes Time (Longer Than You Think)
One of the biggest misconceptions is how long piercings take to heal.
General timelines:
- Lobes: 6–8 weeks+
- Cartilage: 6–12 months
- Navel: 6–12 months+
- Oral piercings: faster externally, longer internally
Even when a piercing looks healed, it may still be fragile internally.
🔄 Don’t Skip Your Check-Up
Downsizing your jewellery is a crucial part of healing not an optional extra.
Wearing jewellery that’s too long for too long can lead to:
- Irritation bumps
- Migration
- Prolonged healing
I recommend booking a check-up around 4–6 weeks so we can assess and adjust your jewellery properly.
🧠 When Something Feels “Off”
If your piercing becomes:
- Increasingly swollen
- Painful
- Hot
- Producing unusual discharge
Don’t guess, get it checked.
Early intervention makes a huge difference.
